Wellington Wave U-15 White wins Labor Day Challenge
The U 15 girls white team from Wellington Wave traveled to Cocoa Beach this labor day weekend to play soccer against ten other Florida girls soccer teams. They played two games on Saturday and one on Sunday to decide ranking amongst the ten teams. The girls played West Pines United Gold on Saturday morning and won 3- 0. The second game on Saturday was versus FSA Freedom Red and the Wave was on top again 2-0. Sunday they played to a tie against FSA Freedom White 0-0. The ten teams were then ranked with Wellington Wave being ranked number two behind Lakeland FC. The semi final game on Sunday afternoon pit Wellington Wave girls against the 3rd ranked team, South Orlando Green Dragons and again the girls proved themselves, winning 2-0.
The final game was Lakeland FC vs Wellington Wave on Monday morning. The score was Wellington 2-Lakeland 0 at what was thought to be the final whistle. The Wellington goalkeeper was assured of another shut out and the team was still undefeated! The victory hugs commenced but the referee decided that the game was not over and awarded the other team a penalty kick with no foul and no time left!! (as a matter of fact, the teams played 4 minutes and 22 seconds of extra time). The Lakeland player spotted the ball and struck a shot at the net. The referee awarded the goal and then turned to say the game was over. Coach Lu Barletta said that it was the most bizaare event that he has ever witnessed ! " The call and subsequent goal had absolutely no bearing on the outcome except to ruin a perfect record.
There was no need for the referee's actions. As far as I am concerned we still have a perfect record of undefeated and unscored upon. My Keeper and her defense deserve as much! No matter how the story is viewed, one thing is certain: UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS!!!" A very exciting and tiring weekend of soccer but a wonderful way for these 17 girls to end their labor day vacation. The girls to date are undefeated, they have already played two regular season games and won both of those games with shutouts. They will continue season play this weekend, playing Miami Force on Saturday away and Cooper City at their home field, Pierson Park on Sunday.
